The Best Pizza in the World

Pizza is the staple food of choice for many slackers across the US because it is both tasty and cheap. When young, a slacker will often times be driven to pizza more for the price than anything else, and taste takes a back seat. Couple that with free delivery and you have a match made in heaven. This goes a long way to explain the success of Dominos Pizza.

As a slacker matures into a young adult and gets himself a cushy IT job explaining to clueless users how to attach a file to an email, he also finds himself in the financial position to afford the finer things in life. He can finally afford some good, quality pizza!

So where is the best pizza in the world? Surely it would be Naples, Italy – the birthplace of tomato sauce smeared on flatbread. An invention, I might add, of the poor.

No, the best pizza in the world is in a flea market in New Jersey. Kate and Al’s Pizza, located at the backside of Columbus Farmers Market in Columbus, NJ has pizza that rivals any found in Naples - hands down. In fact, I’ve been to Italy over five times and have never had a slice of pizza quite as good as Kate and Al’s – not even in Naples.

In any pizzeria in Italy you are presented with a menu that usually lists at least ten varieties of pizza such as margarita, quattro formaggio, bianca, etc. – all with a stock list of ingredients and toppings. Not so at Kate and Al’s. You get one kind of pizza, that’s it. It’s a sort of Sicilian style pizza, square with thick crust. The odd part of this pizza is that the cheese is put on before the sauce. Why this is so, I do not know. It does, however, prevent the cheese from pulling off in one lump. None of this matters though because it is the taste of this pizza that will bend your mind. It’s probably the best tasting food in the world, not just the best pizza. You have to have some, but be warned; once you do you will find yourself making a trip to the Mecca of Kate and Al’s quite often. Dissident and I frequently make the hour-long trip just for lunch. And best of all, it’s cheap! Kate and Al’s are so concerned about cost that they buy holiday plates from past holidays at deeply discounted prices. So at Christmas you usually get your pizza on plates with pumpkins on them. Now that's Yankee ingenuity!

So what of poor Italy? Is there any slacker-friendly food to be had there? Yes! The other staple of any slacker’s diet – coffee. Cappuccino to be exact. And the best part is you do not have to travel far and wide inside Italy to get it, because the best coffee in the world is served right inside the international terminal of Fiumicino Airport in Rome. As soon as you get off your plane, look for a stand with a sign for Illy coffee. Go to it, and tell the person at the counter, “Uno cappuccino, per favore.” A few minutes later you will be presented with the best coffee in the world served in a proper ceramic cup. After you are done drinking your coffee, you can tour the beautiful country of Italy or simply catch the next plane to the States for some great pizza. Either way, you can’t lose.
